Unlike the others in the series, Lassiter himself is on trial for first-degree murder of his girlfriend-banker. Proclaiming his complete innocence, Lassiter sees a carefully stacked deck of evidence against him as this courtroom novel races along at a page burning pace. Almost all of these courtroom thrillers have their moments to highlight the attitudes and approaches that the lawyers take. In this one, a courtroom scene describing a question and answer during Lassiter's trial was described this way: The prosecutor smiled at the defense attorney the way a barracuda smiles at a mullet. This book continues to herald criminal defense attorney Jake Lassiter, except in this instance Jake is the Defendant in the murder case of his sometime girl friend.It is, of course, a set up. But then why would the book be as interesting if it were not?Like all other of Levine’s books, this one is basically a light excursion into the realm of legal thriller. The Plot is seemingly straight forward into how the crime was committed by Jake as argued by the Prosecution. But Jake, as Defendant, can’t resist getting into the action himself when he takes over the cross examination of the State’s witness while on Direct! This leads to an interesting examination leading to a “who dunnit”, or as Jake would opine a SODDI (some other dude did it) defense.I confess that I am a wonk for legal thrillers and Levine fills the bill in that desire albeit in a less than serious way.Read it for fun.
