Ebook About
Derick Lugo had never been hiking. He certainly couldn't imagine going more than a day without manicuring his goatee. But with a job cut short and no immediate plans, this fixture of the New York comedy scene began to think about what he might do with months of free time. He had heard of the Appalachian Trail, but he had never seriously considered attempting to hike all 2,184.2 miles of it. Suddenly he found himself asking, Could he do it? The Unlikely Thru-Hiker is the story of how a young black man from the city, unfamiliar with both the outdoors and thru-hiking culture, sets off with an extremely overweight pack and a willfully can-do attitude to conquer the infamous trail. What follows are lessons on preparation, humility, and nature's wild unpredictability. But this isn't a hard-nosed memoir of discouragement. What sets Lugo apart from the typical walk in the woods is his refusal to let any challenge squash his inner Pollyanna. Through it all, Lugo perseveres with humor, tenacity, and an unshakeable commitment to grooming―earning him the trail name "Mr. Fabulous"―that sees him from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Katahdin in Maine.

Book The Unlikely Thru-Hiker: An Appalachian Trail Journey Review :

Derick Lugo and I have a few things in common: we both live in New York City, love hiking, and obsess over cleanliness. The last two seem to contradict the first and that is what makes his story even more compelling. I read this book in just six hours - a lot less time than it took "Mr. Fabulous" to complete his thru-hike of the AT. But unlike his journey, turning the pages of "The Unlikely Thru-Hiker: An Appalachian Trail Journey" was easy thanks to Derick's witty observations, keen eye for detail and his ability to make his readers feel as if they are there with him. Most importantly, he approaches his accomplishment as a human feat - not necessarily that of an "unlikely" hiker of color. But the fact that he doesn't look like most other hikers should not be lost in the narrative. As a white man who hikes regularly, I know how important it is to have diversity on the trail. Unfortunately, there is not enough. Yes, the details of his incredible feat are important - as are his helpful hiking tips and the great cast of characters we meet along the way. But this book is about so much more - especially for those of us who often feel trapped in our urban environments. There is a great big world out there to explore and new communities to be formed. I always call the wildnerness "the great equalizer." It doesn't care who we are, what we look like, or from where we came. Derick Lugo's voice is an important one because he will inspire a whole new generation of young people who may not always fit the mold of "traditional" hikers and backpackers. Even if you have no interest in the outdoors, pick up a copy of Derick's book and read it as a pure adventure story. You may not know a trekking pole from a Jetboil stove, but all of us can recognize a little bit of ourselves in the human drama that unfolds over the course of nearly 2,200 miles.
This is an amazing book full of amazing stories from a very Fabulous story teller. I can verify many of the occasions, locations and hikers are true (one in particular 😉). The story is a great tale about the most unlikeliest of all to attempt a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2012. Mr. Fabulous, as I will always know him, is a very entertaining, funny, love-able author and fellow human that captivates at ever turn. His outlook and perspective on hiking a very difficult trail over 2190 miles in one attempt and being that he had never even hiked before is inspiration that we can accomplish whatever we put our minds to. On a personal note, when I first met Derick (aka Fabs) at Hawk Mountain shelter, I knew he was destined to go far on the trail. He had such an exuberance and positive outlook that meshed well with mine, and we also hiked a pretty similar pace. My initial thoughts when I learned that he had never hiked or even camped before, let alone backpack, led me to have doubts about his odds, but he has drive and gumption and a determination beyond all. I remember in early conversations on the trail about him recording every aspect of his journey in a journal to hopefully write a book, I knew it would come to fruition. This is his adventure and I am honored to call him my trail brother and friend! So glad I could be a part of his journey and now read the parts I wasn’t involved with. It is a highly entertaining read and difficult to put down. I’ve read a lot of books about the AT and this is one of my all-time favorites!-Overdrive (aka to Fabs, the White Shadow)
